Geography
The village is located east of the road between Avallon Vezelay. Coming on top of a hill where an ancient cross "THE MONTJOIE" and when you discover suddenly and unexpectedly, the splendid panorama of the valley of the Cure, dominated by the monumental figure of the Basilica of St. Mary Magdalene VEZELAY.
The territory is very small Tharoiseau: 865 acres. It is situated 550 feet (167 m) above the level of the Cure flowing Saint-Père below and 1050feet (320 meters) above sea level the soil is clay and limestone bank had provided once the stone used in the original construction of the church of Vezelay.
The population and its activities:
Tharoiseau has now 77 people with a significant proportion of retirees and second homes. The labor force does not account craftsman or merchant.
In 1826, there were 413 inhabitants Tharoiseau and owned about 40 hectares of vines in full bearing. The presence of very old vines allowed Tharoiseau recently obtained the appellation of origin "Burgundy" and thus part of the vineyard has been replanted.
The parish - the church - the graveyard
The parish was created between October 28, 1668 and April 17, 1669, previously Tharoiseau was attached to the parish of HOLY FATHER. Tharoiseau had a chapel which in 1669 became the parish church of "Our Lady of Conception." This church had no steeple, the bell hung above the door. In 1675, a grant allowed the modification of the building and the present church was built in 1851.
In 1669, there was no cemetery Tharoiseau. The burials took place in SAINT PERE. After 1671, many burials were made in the church, awaiting the new cemetery in 1693.
Castle
The castle was rebuilt around 1847 instead of a main building belonging to the family of Estutt Assay. In the cemetery, a chapel, the arms over the entrance that tells us that it is the burial place of the family of Estutt Assay elder branch of an ancient Scottish family who came s' established in France under the reign of Charles VII.
Important Events:
Tharoiseau tired of flying, the misdeeds of brigands and wars was strengthened from 1537, walls that still exist as relics.
Plague of 1563: The plague desolated region. The inhabitants abandoned their homes and settled in rural miserably.
1718-1719: Two years of severe drought. No rain from June to October.
Brother Scubilion - JEAN BERNARD ROUSSEAU:
The priest Fr PETITIER Tharoiseau directed the first step in the Christian life of the son of a stonecutter Jean Bernard Rousseau was born in 1797. 1822. he became a novice in the Christian Brothers in Paris and received the name Brother Scubilion. In 1833 he moved to the island of Reunion, where he became very popular and revered as a saint. He died there in 1867. 2 MAI 1989: Beatification of Brother Scubilion.
